Unfortunately this was unlike a real vacation for David. Being that he had classes all day for continued education credits. However, we did get to spend some time together in the evenings and even managed to squeeze in a couples massage, carriage ride of the new and old town and take a gondola ride to the top of the second highest peak in Germany. (We would have done the tallest peak but the cost was considerably more and the weather at the top was foggy so the chances were slim we would have the best view) It was definitely a nice time, once we did reach the top there was a restaurant. Which we had no problem finding our way around the german menu once we got inside. Apple strudel...yes please! Hot chocolate? Don't mind if I do too! The perfect way to warm up! The forecast had mentioned possible snow one day when we were going to be in Garmisch and the forecast was right! It was so pretty to see all the evergreen trees lightly dusted with snow and the mountain peaks to be bright white.
While we were in the hotel we met some awesome couples we made friends instantly with. The girls and I even took a couple trips together while there. One group shopping trip with all the wives to Munich. Where we saw the famous Hofbrau house that Hitler used to give his speeches in. Great food btw. And the other trip the girls and I took was to Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the castle that inspired Walt Disney with not only the Disney castle but Bambi too! The murals on the inside of the castle were amazing. On the same tour we also stopped at a wood carvers shop with all sorts of cool toys and a famous church that was donated by the Vatican after a miracle had been witnessed from a woman that had purchased a statue of Jesus Christ that one day had started weeping. Which she then donated to the local small church of the village. But once word got out, visitors from all over the world came to witness this miracle and pretty soon the little church couldn't handle all the traffic so they asked the Vatican for a new church to hold this miracle. Many years later after construction. They had built this very large church and from what we were told - More visitors come to see that church than they do Neuschwanstein! It was awesome to see and what even more cool? The tour guide called ahead to the little shop next door and had asked them to make fresh donuts! I will have to say this was also one of my favorite parts of this tour! Hot cocoa and hot fresh sugary donuts! Yum!
There was also a crazy bavarian night we attended while at the conference. Everyone was invited to this large hall and they had authentic bavarian entertainment. There were horn players, cow bell music, traditional dancing, and my favorite was the three men in bavarian attire playing their whips to the beat of the music. You will just have to see it (we have a video)
I think my favorite meal while there was the last night with everyone when we ate at this awesomely delicious german restaurant. They had everything a carnivore could want and even things to please the vegetarian (there's one in every group....Lol)
I know there is plenty I might be leaving out but it was a great time and we will definitely be back soon!
(I found out you can stay in igloos at the top of the mountains and they have hot tubs up there and restaurants too!) Next time - I will be on the mountain in my snowboard gear!
Talk to you soon!
